Another map illustration from the attic. In 1992, Sugarbush's two mountains Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen, were not yet connected via lift and two trail maps were used. The original pencil rendering above was the master reference for their hand painted on mountain maps.

The bottom image shows the map with the tissue paper overlay, all resort information, trail names, lines, ratings, labels, etc...were marked up on this tissue.

Sometime in the late 60's, we took a family trip to Mount Snow, which seemed so far away and was a big deal. Back then they still had the huge, frozen, artesian well and the heated outdoor pool at the lodge.

This was also the first time skiing that I rode a chairlift.

Notice that compared to the photo on the main blog page ... about the only thing that has changed is the location and that I've grown about a foot...but I'm still in the same boots and skis.

What a ski season! Or somewhat non-season this year.

Crazy times with Coronavirus abruptly ended the season and put a hold on a number of projects. That hasn't kept us from working here at VistaMap, keeping up existing projects and updates.

A few things being wrapped up are maps for MISSION RIDGE and the Summer conversion of the ARAPAHOE BASIN map, as shown below.

Slowly and cautiously signs of life and reopening are starting to show. Let's keep our fingers crossed for good snow and open resorts this Winter.

The lifts are still turning for Spring skiing at Sun Valley, but at VistaMap, Spring has sprung with the new and expanded Sun Valley Summer Hiking/Biking map.

New for the 2018-19 season, Vail Mountain tasked VistaMap to convert the existing trail map into a fun and friendly map, specifically for kid's and families.

​Vail Mountain has a variety of Adventure Zones and Family Learning Zones that provide unique and fun features to build confidence and challenge kid's skiing and riding abilities through exploration.

VistaMap simplified the map, updated colors, textures and fonts and created custom icons to key guests to the locations and descriptions of the Adventure Zones and Family Learning Zones.

​This WAS a fun project!

Okemo is in the news, having just been purchased (along with Mount Sunapee and Crested Butte) by Vail Resorts... a perfect opportunity to pull the trail map illustration I did of Okemo in 1991 out of the attic.

Kicking off the 2018 map season with recent a visit to Idaho (look for the results this Fall) via Salt Lake City. Caught a bluebird day and first tracks in Devil's Castle at Alta...all work and no play...

Prior to starting VistaMap, I worked a few years for the North American division of an Austrian company creating and maintaining trail maps for resorts across the U.S. The final product of these maps were individually hand painted, based on pencil renderings.

I've recently come across a few of these renderings I produced, the first I will share is of Telluride done in 1992. Complete with the paint splatter from production of the large maps.
